Crank rolled drop curtains
Crank rolled drop curtains are easy to roll away when not in use, and can be made from clear PVC or mesh for privacy and wind protection.
Crank rolled drop curtains have a 63mm roller tube, with cast aluminum wall brackets and a gearbox and crank handle.
They have a fabric pocket at the bottom, with an aluminum tube in it, to keep the fabric flat. Stainless steel (s/s) saddles with boat snaps are riveted to this bar, which attach to s/s ground fittings.
Fabric options include 0.75mm fire retardant clearglass PVC, with a coloured border for reinforcing, as well as a large range of mesh fabrics.
Crank rolled drop curtains can be up to 5.5m wide with a 3.5m drop.
Cool Awnings drop curtains are manufactured using a high frequency welding process, and have a 5 year warranty on most fabrics, labour and hardware.
Drop curtains are NOT suitable for high wind situations.
Limitations of use
Drop curtains are designed to keep wind and rain out in moderate weather conditions only. No fabric structure is capable of holding up in storm conditions, and no warranty is offered for wind or storm damage.
Each fabric has its merits and limitations, and which one is chosen is often a compromise.
This is very popular, because it provides best visibility. Unfortunately there are limitations which must be understood.
The fabric is not reinforced, and if it starts to tear, the tear will continue. To overcome this, we often weld a reinforced PVC border to it, but this is labour intensive, and adds to cost.
The fabric has a high shrinkaqe rate. For this reason, we avoid using Zips and eyelets on the sides, as they may no longer fit after a period of time. The shrinkage can also result in side wrinkles. No warranty is offered on shrinkage.
It does not retain 100% clarity for very long, scratches easily, and becomes milky looking when waterlogged.
Tends to stretch out of shape, and often rolls crooked, and tends to stick to itself when rolled.
These are a compromise, as they do not provide 100% weather protection, or 100% visibility. We have found that mesh DOES provide better protection and visibility than generally envisaged. We think it looks better, and is more durable, and does not shrink much. There are a variety of colours, brands, and mesh sizes. PVC mesh come with a 10 year warranty.
Good for durability, does not shrink. Problem is lack of visibility.
Translucent PVC Reinforced PVC
Reinforced PVC which is transluscent. Lets light pass through, but not see through.
We do not use eyelets, which create stress points and and tend to tear.
On the bottom, we use a metal pipe in a bottom pocket which distributes the load evenly into the fabric. This is held down either by karibiners, attached by springs, or bungy cords which help to absorb shock loads.
If side fixings are required, we recommend Velcro, as this evenly distributes load into the fabric. It will also pull away from the post or wall in excessive wind, and help to protect the fabric.
Care must be taken to ensure that at least one panel can be burst open from inside in case of fire
